How it all started...
In the early 60’s, a core group from Vicksburg Free Methodist Church and Kalamazoo Free Methodist Church explored planting a new Free Methodist Church in the small but growing community of Portage, Michigan. On October 7, 1962, it became official, as the first worship gathering of the Portage Free Methodist took place at Waylee Elementary School -- now the Administration building for Portage Public Schools. In 1963, the church built at 1715 W. Centre Ave and grew along with the city. Over the years, countless people have encountered Jesus, served our community, supported global missions, and had a heart of hospitality and healing for all who came.

Expanding the vision...
By 2017, the church sensed God leading in a new direction toward becoming a multisite church -- multiple sites, but one church. With that calling came the need to change: our understanding of ministry in a wider and more diverse community, the clarity of our mission, and even our name. On September 16, 2018, we became Renovation Church. The term “renovation” perfectly describes what it means to become like Jesus in Spiritual Formation. While our multisite plans have been put on hold in the last few years, we continue to search for God to open doors. Today, Renovation Church meets in Portage, ministering to local families, and connects to others who find our presence online. No matter where you connect with us, our mission is simple: to help people find, follow, and be like Jesus.
Where we are headed...
We want to be where people are, since that’s where Jesus is doing His Kingdom-building work. We want to serve where a servant is needed. We want to be a place that acknowledges that we are ALL works in progress, undergoing spiritual renovation. We want to make ancient spiritual practices meaningful in our daily lives. We want to help bring the healing our community and world so desperately needs. Whether you join us in Portage, Online, or in the community, you’ll get a glimpse of a church that exists for the sake of others and feels called to become what Jesus envisions for each of us. You’re reading this story. So far, so good! Guess what -- now you’re part of it.
